Summer Sisterlocks Care: Why Hydration Comes Before Oil

If your scalp feels sweaty but your Sisterlocks still feel dry, you are not imagining it, Queen.

That summer feeling can be confusing. Your scalp may feel warm, damp, or even oily, yet your actual hair still feels stiff, thirsty, or dull. A lot of women reach for more oil at that moment, hoping it will fix the problem. The truth is, dry hair usually needs hydration first, not a heavier coating.

That is where steaming can make such a difference.

Steam helps bring water-based support to the hair. It can help dry-feeling Sisterlocks soften, feel more flexible, and become easier to manage. When hair has been feeling rough, lifeless, or just “off,” steam can be a gentle reset. It is not magic, and it does not need to be overdone. It simply helps create a moisture-friendly environment so your routine makes more sense.

Oil has a place too, but oil is not the first step. Oil is support. Oil helps seal. Oil helps soften. Oil can help reduce friction and add comfort to areas that need a little extra love. What oil does not do well is replace hydration. When hair is dry, layering more oil on top can leave Sisterlocks feeling heavy, coated, or sticky without truly solving the problem underneath.

That is why the order matters.

Hydrate first. Seal lightly.

For many women with Sisterlocks, especially in summer, a simple routine works best. Cleanse the scalp, condition as needed, steam when your hair needs moisture support, and then use a small amount of oil with intention. The goal is not to drench the hair. The goal is to support the crown wisely.

Peppermint oil can be a beautiful companion to a summer scalp routine. It is known for its cooling, refreshing feel, and it gives the scalp that awakened sensation many women enjoy. Research has also brought attention to peppermint oil for scalp stimulation, although the strongest findings so far come from early animal research rather than large human trials. Even so, many women love it for the fresh, tingly feeling it brings to the scalp, especially around the edges, crown, and nape.

Avocado oil plays a different role. It is more of a soft, nourishing support. It contains naturally occurring fatty acids and vitamin E, and those qualities are valued in hair care for helping the hair feel smoother, more lubricated, and less brittle. If peppermint feels like fresh scalp support, avocado feels like softness support.

That pairing can be so helpful: peppermint for the scalp, avocado for the areas that feel dry, fragile, or in need of a little more comfort.

This kind of routine is especially helpful for women whose hair is changing with age. Hair can thin. Texture can shift. The hair you have now may not respond the same way it did years ago. That does not mean panic. It means your crown may need a gentler rhythm, a little more patience, and a more intentional routine.

It also means you do not have to keep guessing.

Knowing your porosity can help you understand how your Sisterlocks receive and hold moisture. That one piece of understanding can save time, money, and frustration. It can also bring what I love to call hair peace.

For this summer steam-and-oil rhythm, I’m featuring Peppermint Hair Oil and Green-Gold Avocado Hair Oil together. Think of peppermint as your fresh scalp support when your crown needs that awakened, stimulated feeling, and avocado as your soft, nourishing support for dry areas, edges, and strands that need extra care after hydration.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is a crown that feels cared for.

So if your Sisterlocks have been feeling dry, heavy, or confusing this summer, come back to the basics. Bring in hydration. Use oil wisely. Stay light-handed. Be consistent. And keep listening to what your hair is asking for.

Your crown does not need panic.
It needs rhythm, support, and care.
